Learning geosteering basics is essential for any drilling engineer. Geosteering basics involve managing your position within a rock layer. You can visualize this by understanding two simple angles: your wellbore’s direction and the tilt of the rock layers.

How Geosteering Basics Relate to Rock

Think of the rock layer as a ramp. Your drill bit is like a car driving on that ramp. Your goal is to stay on the ramp. If you do not stay on the ramp, you will drive off the top or bottom.

  • Matching the Angle: Aim your drill bit at the same angle as the rock layer. This helps you stay in the middle of that layer. This is the ideal scenario for a horizontal well.
  • Aiming Upward: A steeper angle than the rock layer means you will exit the top.
  • Aiming Downward: A shallower angle than the rock layer means you will exit the bottom.
